The classic Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic mocktail made using grenadine and ginger ale. It was created and served to the child star it was named for: Shirley Temple.
Shirley was Hollywood’s top box-office draw from 1934 to 1938. She had nothing to do with the creation of her namesake drink and found it too sweet for her tastes. So, this riff on the kid’s menu classic swaps the store-bought grenadine for a fruit-forward homemade version and replaces the ginger ale with ginger beer for a little extra burn and zing to cut through the sweet.

directions
This recipe has a 2 hour cooling time.

Pour the pomegranate juice and cherry juice into a large skillet. Add the sugar and the ginger and bring the mixture up to a boil. Cook until the mixture registers 230°F on a candy thermometer.

Transfer the grenadine to a heat-proof jar and let it cool to room temperature before transferring it to the fridge. Let cool for a minimum of 2 hours or overnight.

Fill two frosted glasses with ice. Pour two tablespoons of the grenadine into each glass. Add the ginger beer and garnish each drink with a lemon wedge and a skewer of 2-3 maraschino cherries. Serve immediately.
Note:
The grenadine will keep in the fridge for two to three weeks.
